The plastic protects items during shipping but unfortunately makes the packaging nonrecyclable. If you can’t easily separate the paper from the plastic, neither can a recycling facility. But although the packaging isn’t recyclable, it is reusable. Just put new labels over the old, tape it closed, and avoid a trip to the office supply store before you mail your next package.

➤ Printed store receipts

These may look recyclable, but thermal paper is usually coated with a layer of bisphenol A (BPA) or bisphenol S (BPS). BPA is the same additive that was removed from hard plastic bottles because of the health risks associated with the chemical. BPS is a related chemical that poses similar risks. That coating is not recyclable. Requesting email receipts instead of printed ones is a way to reduce this waste stream, but many stores use systems that print receipts even if the customer doesn’t want one. You can also ask the store manager to switch to a bisphenol-free paper the next time they order office supplies.
